Things to Consider

Consider the size of your home and make sure the furnace you are considering is appropriate for that space.

  • Location

    Ask your licensed HVAC contractor for a sizing calculation. A Residential Load Calculation is the recommended method.

  • Energy Efficiency

    Look for the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating.

    A higher AFUE means better efficiency and lower monthly operating costs.

  • Venting Options

    Furnaces may have specific venting requirements. Consider this as you shop, and make sure your space can accommodate your new furnace.

  • Warranties

    Investigate and compare warranty plans available to you from the appliance manufacturer.

    Ask important questions, including:

    • Does the warranty cover equipment and installation?

    • If so, for how long?

    • What is the typical cost of service and maintenance?

  • Price

    Compare prices to ensure you're getting the best deal on the product, installation, warranties and service support.

    A low purchase price may not be the overall best choice for saving money. High-efficiency furnaces often cost more, but their low energy consumption results in higher savings each month.

  • Contractors

    Your contractor should be properly licensed and insured. Ask if he or she installs and services products. You should ask for (and receive) an estimate in writing.
